Chapter Five

The finest steel has to go through the hottest fire

Splintering pain stabbed his skull. Delvin squeezed his eyes tighter and wished the agony would just let him die in peace. What the fuck did I do last night? In a flash he remembered. Simon had shown up and what had begun as a fantastic date night, ended up with him drinking.

A lot.

He cracked open his eyes, grateful the room didn’t have a lot of light shining. A far window was open, making it so he could see where he was walking but it wasn’t like being outside in the sun. What the fuck had woken him?

Two seconds later, he realized he had to fucking take a leak. Moving as quick as he could for one who needed to have gingerly motions, he shuffled his way to the bathroom and pissed. As he washed his hands, he stared at his reflection.

Huge fucking bags under his eyes. Bloodshot eyes. He didn’t look good at all.

He wasn’t at his place which meant, he was at Ken’s.

Fuck.

Splashing some water on his face, he shook his head and turned to get in the shower. A tiny bit of water on his face wasn’t going to cut it. He needed the shower.

He needed a lot of things.

A short time later, he stood beneath the pounding spray and let the streams do their job. He kept his eyes closed and hands braced on the wall to keep him up. While he only felt marginally better when he finished, he’d take it. Better, after all, was better.

Towel around his waist, he set off to find his boyfriend. If I can still call him that. Ken was in the kitchen and the moment he walked in, the man looked at him before gesturing to the mug on the dark yellow countertop.

“Drink.”

He didn’t ask, just lifted it and emptied the concoction. His eyes burned and he longed to spit it out but he didn’t.

“How’d you know what I needed?”

“Because you drank nearly a fifth of the scotch. It’s a hangover remedy.”

Del rubbed the back of his neck. “Are we okay?”

“You mean did you do or say anything last night that you have to apologize for?”

Leave it to Ken to not beat around the bush but drive straight through it. “Yeah, something like that.”

He put his own mug to his lips and drank. Coffee from the smell. Because he could smell that elixir but it surely wasn’t what he’d been given.

“Nope.”

“I want to ask if you’re sure but somehow I think all you will say is the same thing.”

“I don’t lie, Delvin. You want to talk about something, are you up for discussing that man from last night.”

Rage pumped once more. “Simon.”

“Could have done without the breathy way you say his name but yes, him.”

“He and I were engaged.”

Ken’s expression pinched and he knew that wasn’t a good sign. Swallowing, he wanted some more drink but forged ahead.

“We’d dated for a few years and I asked him to marry me. For a while, everything was fucking perfect.
